An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 on the Richter scale has hit the capital of Vanuatu, Port Vila today, around 2.50 pm NZT (12.50 pm VUT).
The earthquake has left several buildings damaged and reported 14 casualties. The number may increase as there are fallen buildings with people still trapped under them.
All the networks are still down, and the Vanuatu High Commission has established contacts with the capital and the government is yet to release detailed reports of the damage.
Preliminary assessments are underway.
NZ P8A NZDF plane has made a surveillance flight today around Port Vila today and all imagery of damages has been shared with Vanuatu government for planning purposes.
Most of the business houses have been shaken and damaged one way or another and will take some time before a full assessment report is done.
NZ GOVERNMENT is on standby to offer more assistance.
NZDF C130 Hercules is on standby to be mobilized with equipment and search and rescue teams today. This is planned for today afternoon.
The airport is still closed for commercial flights until further notice. An assessment of the airport is also underway.
