
The Vanuatu High Commission was invited on the 1st of March 2024 to attend the first-ever Vanuatu traditional wedding ceremony between a Vanuatu-descendant man to a Māori girl in Pukehina, Bay of Plenty, NZ. It was an awesome sight of traditional Tanna costumes, colors, and exchange of mahi between the two ethnic groups. HE Jimmy Nipo, the High Commissioner of Vanuatu presided over the Vanuatu traditional wedding ceremony where he first gave a traditional Vanuatu context to the wedding ceremony, saying he was happy to be witnessing such a tradition in Aotearoa. The local Iwi leader expressed his desire to see visiting cultures present their traditions to the tangata whenua.
