On 27th November 2025, Wellington diplomatic missions gathered around at Michael Fowler Centre to celebrate three events: UAE Commemoration Day (30th November) – national day for remembering those that sacrificed their lives for the country; 54 years of Independence and 40 years of diplomatic relations with NZ in Wellington.

UAE Commemoration Day is observed every year on November 30, a day dedicated to honoring the nation’s martyrs who sacrificed their lives while carrying out their national duty, both within the country and abroad.

UAE gained independence on 1st December 1971. Six (6) of the seven (7) Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah) declared their Union on that day, while Raws Ai Khaimah joined later in Feb 1972.

Diplomatic ties between New Zealand and the UAE were established in 1985 and since then, both countries have maintained a close and friendly relationship.

The evening was colored by laser lighting demonstration, singing & dancing, speeches, a raffle draw from Air Emirates and great food.

Congratulations UAE!
